Your wine
Here are some basic principles that you can follow to keep your wine collection in the best possible condition:
- Rule No.1
A constant temperature. Wine hates temperature variations. Ideally, you should store your bottles in a place where the temperature varies no more than between 10°C and 14°C. When it goes above 14°C, the wine’s ageing process is accelerated, while excessively low temperatures slow it down. Well-insulated walls and an efficient control system are also important. - Rule No.2
The right humidity. The corks need to be protected against dehydration and oxidation. Humidity should be kept above 65%. Aluminium walls help to keep humidity constant. Excess humidity destroys labels. - RuleNo.3
Perfect darkness. Light can damage your bottles and cause “light strike”. So they need protecting from light with solid doors, or glass doors that have been treated against UV rays. - Rule No.4
Good ventilation. Bad smells and mould are no friend to wine either. It’s essential to have a good ventilation system that keeps the air constantly renewed and circulating well. - Rule No.5
An anti-vibration system. Too much vibration can disrupt how the wine evolves, by accelerating ageing and preventing tannin deposits. It is best to use a wine cabinet with a separate compressor.
It is the process during which a wine improves, to reach its full potential, which is known as its peak or apogee. This period can range from 2 years to over 20 years. It depends on the type of wine, the vintage, the appellation and above all the terroir from which the wine comes. How the wine was made and aged, and the size of the bottle also play a role.
All wines should be aged at the same temperature, close to 12°C, like in a natural cellar. That’s why an ageing cabinet has just one single temperature setting.
During this ageing period, it’s important to keep the wine under certain conditions:
- A stable and uniform temperature, close to 12°C
- A good humidity level
- Protection against UV rays
- No vibrations
- Constant air renewal
Ageing a wine simply means keeping it in good condition over a long period of time, to allow it to reach its peak.
This is when wines are prepared for consumption at the right temperature. Temperature is a key element in wine service because a few degrees too high or too low can spoil the tasting experience. Cold temperatures tend to harden the tannins and bring out bitterness, while warm temperatures inhibit the aromas and highlight the alcohol content. It’s important to understand a few rules about serving temperature so you can fully appreciate everything a wine has to offer. And we’re here to help. Let’s cut down the risk of a faux-pas with these tips, and remember that your wine merchant or local winemaker is best placed to give you advice.
- Fine red wines from Bordeaux: 17-19°C
- Fine red wines from Burgundy: 16-17°C
- Fine red wines before they reach their peak: 15-16°C
- Fine dry white wines: 13-14°C
- Young, light red wines: 13-14°C
- Rosé wines: 10-12°C
- Dry white wines: 10-12°C
- Regular white wines: 8-10°C
- Non-vintage champagnes, sparkling wines: 7-8°C
- Vintage champagnes: 9-10°C
- Sweet wines: 7-8°C
Also remember that your wine will warm up in a glass by about two degrees, so take this into account when you serve it from a bottle or carafe.
A good service cabinet must therefore be able to bring all types of wine to their perfect serving temperature.
Your cabinet
Charcoal filters are there to filter the air that comes into the wine cabinet. Its purpose is to guarantee that the air inside the cabinet is not polluted when it is not constantly renewed. ArteVino wine cabinets are designed to guarantee constant air renewal and therefore there is no need for charcoal filters.
The cabinet is fitted with a resistor which begins working when the outside temperature drops below 10°C. As a result, the temperature of the wine inside the cabinet stays the same, even if the surroundings are cold, as they might be in a garage during the winter.
Often confused with ageing temperature, serving temperatures are essential in helping the wine release its flavours and aromas. Lien vers la page “Which feature is right for you?“
By temperature range, we mean the variety of different temperatures you can create inside your cabinet.
For example, a cabinet with factory settings at 12°C, which has a potential range of between 8°C and 17°C can be set to a (uniform) temperature of 8°C, 11°C, 16°C or other temperature.
The temperature setting applies to the wine cabinet as a whole.
In service cabinets, you can set a minimum temperature (at the bottom of the cabinet) and a maximum temperature (at the top of the cabinet).
In service cabinets, you can set a minimum temperature (at the bottom of the cabinet) and a maximum temperature (at the top of the cabinet).
The temperature range of multi-temperature or service wine cabinets is staggered from the bottom of the cabinet to the top, and can go from 6°C to 20°C.
Each level of the cabinet has a different temperature.
This temperature gradient means that you can achieve the ideal tasting temperature for all types of wine.
It’s essential to understand this range so you know where to install your cabinet.
The recommended operating temperature range is specified by the manufacturer and indicates the variations in external temperatures that the cabinet can bear without altering its performance. This temperature range varies according to the type of cabinet, the variations available, and the type of door which insulates your cabinet.
The Oxygen range includes wine cabinets developed to optimise your storage capacity and is freestanding. The very wide range includes three different sizes, different colours for the body of the cabinet, and a selection of features. COSY is a compact range that has been developed to fit into any space. It can be freestanding or built into a kitchen counter. It has a beautiful, understated design that will highlight your wine bottles.

You should base your choice of wine cabinet on several criteria.
First, what do you need? Why do you want a wine cabinet? Do you want to age your wine, or keep it at tasting temperature?
Then it’s time to choose your bottle capacity. Next, what type of installation you prefer. Lastly, where are you going to install your cabinet? This will help you decide how you want it to look. See our selection guide for more details.
What are the differences between a uniform-temperature, multi-temperature, and two- or three-temperature cabinet?
A uniform-temperature cabinet, by definition, has only one temperature throughout. It is designed for ageing wines. The inside temperature is close to 12°C, which means it can be used for ageing all types of wine.
A multi-temperature cabinet or service cabinet is one with a range of temperatures, so you can bring all your bottles to the ideal tasting temperature. The purpose of this cabinet is to keep the bottles for a fairly short time.
Two- or three-temperature cabinets have separate insulated compartments for different purposes: a chilling compartment, an ageing compartment, and for three-temperature cellars, a compartment for bringing wines to the correct room temperature.
See our wine cabinet selection guide for more details.
Our wine cabinets are fitted with LED lighting. This type of lighting does not generate heat, so will not affect your wine.
